The program was initially offered at the University of Texas, but it quickly became a distance learning program as a result of a collaborative partnership with the Connecticut Center for Child Development (Glenn & Ala’I-Rosales, 2001). For example, the University of North Texas offered the first master’s degree program to be accredited by the Association of Behavior Analysis in 1993 (Glenn & Ala’I-Rosales, 2001). Although the majority of the BACB ® training programs are offered by a single institution, some institutions have adopted a collaborative approach. One aspect relates to the collaborative nature of the programs. However, there is no empirical data to demonstrate that one method is better than another (Shook et al., 2002).įour aspects of the BACB ® training programs preparing BCBAs ® merit further discussion. These programs utilize various approaches to train behavior analysts, including short courses supplemented by videotaped lectures and readings, computer-based courses and on-site learning situations, or graduate program courses offered in a cohort model via video conferencing or in a face-to-face format (Johnston, 2016 Martinez-Diaz & Wilder, 2016 Shook et al., 2002 Warkomski, 1999).

To address the shortage of certified behavior analysts in the field of behavior analysis, numerous Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB ®) training programs have been created across the USA. These services and interventions are beneficial for other populations, such as individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the elderly, and are applicable to other domains, including health and fitness, health care, child care, animal behavior, and management and business (LeBlanc et al., 2012 Normand & Kohn, 2013).Īlthough data suggest that the field of ABA has grown dramatically since its inception and the number of BCBAs ® continues to show an increasing trend, the demand for behavior-analytic services exceeds the current supply of well-trained and certified behavior analysts (Granpeesheh et al., 2010 Shook, Ala’IRosales, & Glenn, 2002 Weiss & Shook, 2010). However, ABA services and behavioral interventions are not limited to individuals with ASD. Two of the contributing factors to the dramatic increase in the number of BCBAs ® are (a) the effectiveness of behavioral interventions for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and (b) the advocacy on health reform laws (LeBlanc, Heinicke, & Baker, 2012 Normand & Kohn, 2013). For example, the number of Board Certified Behavior Analysts ® (BCBAs ®) has steadily increased from approximately 200 in 2000 to nearly 23,000 in 2016 ( BACB, n.d.

The field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) has rapidly evolved since initial discussions on credentialing first began at the University of Kansas in 1972 (Normand & Kohn, 2013 Shook, Johnston, & Mellichamp, 2004).
